Bethany, MO: Dr. Glenn Dean “Doc” Windom, 88, Bethany, MO passed away at home on Wednesday, August 12th, 2020.
Dean the son of Glenn and Agnes Windom was born May 3rd, 1932 in Clay Center, NE. He graduated from Lenox, IA High School in 1951. He married Joan Lois Dodge January 12th, 1962. Dean served in the United States Army. While at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Aurora, CO, he shared a piece of President Dwight Eisenhower’s birthday cake when the President was hospitalized for a heart attack. He received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1966. He practiced as a large and small animal veterinarian in Harrison County for over 50 years (1966 to 2020).
In 1943, Dean exhibited the Grand Champion in the Shorthorn division at the Kansas City American Royal and continued to attend yearly for over 50 years. Dr. Windom shared his expertise with his grandchildren as well as the 4-H and FFA youth for over 40 years. He was an inductee into 4-H Hall of Fame, recognized by the South Harrison Bulldog Athletics as an Honorary Booster Club member, and was presented the Animal Veterinarian Award by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed watching and analyzing almost any sporting event.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sally Barnes, brother-in-laws Stanley Barnes and Harold (Mick) O’Riley.
Dean is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Windom, Bethany, MO; three children, Dr. Barbara Adkins, Shawnee, KS, Nancy Laporta, Shawnee, KS, and Shelly O’Boynick (Dr. Paul O’Boynick), Kansas City, KS; sisters, Beverly O’Riley, Ankeny, Iowa and Marilyn Wurster (Gary), Tupelo, MS; grandchildren, Dr. Chris O’Boynick (Katie), Allison Serrano (Aaron), Alex Adkins, Logan Adkins, James Laporta, and Maggie Laporta; great-grandchildren, Adelyn, William, Emilia, and Elliott and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Graveside Services and Burial were held Monday, August 17 in Miriam Cemetery, Bethany, MO.
