Moores complete restoration of old barn on family farm

In the spring of 2023, Matt and Tracy Moore received a grant from the Iowa Barn Foundation to restore an old barn on their family farm. The grant was for $24,188. The Moores purchased the farm from Tracy’s grandparents, Emory and Doris Hardee after moving back to the area. Matt finished restoring the barn on November 17, 2025.
Matt, his daughter Kalynn and son Cord, did all the work themselves through the restoration process. They did some reframing and resupported the barn. There were rotten boards that needed replaced and it was sided with wood siding and painted “barn red”. Matt received great advice from Bob Thompson on construction advice and Alex Peterson for painting advice.
The barn was built sometime in the 1930s and Emory purchased the farm after World War II. Then it was used for milking dairy cows, farrowing pigs and hay storage. While tearing boards out, Matt found templates written on the boards on how the barn was built.
